In 2019, over a quarter of excavation damages were due to locating practices (DIRT Report 2019). We're collaborating with 3M™ to set a new standard for protecting, identifying, and locating all types of buried utilities. The 3M™ Electronic Marking System (EMS) Warning Tape 7900 Series contains Radiofrequency (RF) path markers that eliminate many pain points in the location process. The XT version of this product uses proprietary Signaltape® technology and contains a high-strength core to mitigate risk by alerting excavators prior to encountering an underground facility even when crews do not take proactive measures (such as making the locate request, potholing).
This innovative product was designed for ease of use.
- Single step installation for marker tape and embedded path markers.
- No measuring required to ensure markers are properly distanced as they are already embedded into the tape at the correct intervals.
- Comes in a unique box format that is easier to work with than traditional rolls; only one person is required to install the tape as it dispenses from the box rather than having two people carry a heavy and bulky spool.
Repeated excavation damages in an area can be problematic -- they can destroy the location devices we count on to support accurate utility locating and safe digging. The pathmarking tape is not prone to the same vulnerabilities as other options for locating utilities.

- Does not require power or continuity.
- Markers function independently; in the event one is damaged or removed, the rest remain functional.
- No "bleed off" when locating - each marker is assigned a vertical-specific frequency.

- For utilities that are installed before others in newly developed areas.
- For temporary lines that will need to be precisely located and identified prior to being removed.
